In an interview with CNN, the Ukrainian president said the decision to defend the city so fiercely was tactical, warning that Vladimir Putin’s troops could move on to other cities in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region.

Zelenskyy said he understood what Moscow wanted to achieve with fierce fighting in the besieged city.

“They have to put their little flag on top (of Bakhmut). It’s not a victory for them, it’s more about mobilizing their society, to create the idea that they are a very powerful army.”, he said.
