The Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine is increasingly focused on the city of Bakhmut in Donetsk.

President Zelenskyy warned that the situation is becoming “extremely difficult” for Ukrainian forces who have repelled more than 60 attacks.

Russian attacks continue towards Limansk, but the main target of the Russian attack remains Bakhmut.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy admitted last night that the situation around Bakhmut, in the east of the country, is getting worse.

“The situation is becoming more complicated, he said in his regular daily address to his compatriots. The enemy is systematically destroying everything that can be used to protect our positions.”, he added, calling the Ukrainian soldiers participating in that battle “real heroes.”

Russian forces have been trying to capture Bakhmut since last summer, whose strategic importance is disputed but which has become a symbol of the struggle for control of Donbas, in eastern Ukraine.

The leader of the pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk region (eastern Ukraine), Denis Pushilin, said yesterday on Russian television that all access roads to Bakhmut are “within the range of weapons” of the pro-Russian forces.

Russian forces have been trying to encircle Bakhmut for weeks and have succeeded in cutting off several main supply routes for the Ukrainian army. The commander of Russia’s Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, claimed on Saturday that his men had entered the village of Yakhidne, in the northern suburb of Bakhmut.
