Russian forces have made progress in the eastern frontline town of Bakhmut, Ukrainian military officials said, adding that their fighters were still holding out in a months-long battle in which both sides suffered heavy losses.
The fighting for Bakhmut is intensifying
In southern Ukraine, the head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog said there was a significant increase in the number of troops in the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear region and that it could no longer be protected. The mining town of Bakhmut and surrounding towns in the eastern industrial region of Donetsk have been a focal point of attack for most of Russia’s 13-month invasion of Ukraine.
