TikTok has announced a default daily screen time limit for profiles with users under 18.
TikTok: Minors will only be able to use it for 60 minutes a day
The 60-minute limit will be introduced in response to app security concerns, and children will have to provide a password and make an active decision to continue watching after reaching the limit.
For accounts of users under 13 years of age, parents or guardians will have to set or enter a password to allow an additional 30 minutes of viewing.
The company will encourage teens to set a daily limit and send weekly notifications about screen time.
Although social media algorithms promote content for users’ interests, critics believe they can push users into cesspools of harmful content, as is the case with TikTok where harmful content for vulnerable teenagers can be promoted.
