The British royal family is known for its unique holiday customs, and one of the quirkiest involves a Christmas morning tradition that separates men and women for breakfast.
Unusual Christmas Traditions: Royal Breakfast Split Revealed
As the royals gear up for the festive season, former royal chef Darren McGrady sheds light on the morning routine at Sandringham House. McGrady reveals that on Christmas morning, there’s a gender divide when it comes to breakfast, with the ladies, including Princess Kate, enjoying a light meal of sliced fruit, half a grapefruit, toast, and coffee delivered to their rooms.
McGrady explains, “The male royals, meanwhile, come downstairs to the dining room for a hearty breakfast at 8:30 a.m., with eggs, bacon and mushrooms, kippers, and grilled kidneys, to set them up for the 11:00 a.m. church service at St Mary Magdalene. When they return, it’s straight into pre-lunch drinks.”
While this tradition may seem like old-fashioned gender separation, McGrady suggests that it could have originated from practical considerations. He notes that women might have needed more time to get ready in the morning, explaining why they opted for breakfast in their rooms.
Regardless of the quirky morning routine, Christmas Eve remains an intimate time for the royal family, marked by gift exchanges and a delightful dinner, perhaps enjoyed with a glass of the late Queen Elizabeth’s favorite drink, a “Zaza.”
